Work/Life Balance is not a one-size-fits-all definition. It varies greatly depending on your current priorities. It is about sharing time between yourself, your business, family and community. The percentages may change depending on your business demands, but one demand should never completely outweigh the others combined.

  • As a definition:
    • Work is the function performed in the business, the rewards you receive, and the time you spend doing it.
    • Life is how you spend the rest of your time and the rewards you received from working. This covers health, family, friends, personal interests, sport, and community.
    • Balance is the equilibrium between your work and your life. This generally goes out of kilter when someone spends too much time at work for too little reward. Obviously this can occur for short periods of time and is acceptable in busy periods or when starting a business. However, the objective must be to achieve a long-term, sustainable balance.
